Hormonal Analysis

Fewer than 3% of cases of male infertility are estimated to be  primarily due to a hormonal cause.

If semen parameters are abnormal (Low sperm count, no sperms) or there is evidence of sexual dysfunction, hormone tests are indicated. It is not a routine part of evaluation of a male

Hormones that are produced by the pituitary, hypothalamus and testicles play an important role in sexual development and sperm production in Men.

What Hormones are Measured?

When clinically indicated, testing of specific serum hormone levels of following hormones are ordered:

  • Free Testosterone
  • Total Testosterone
  • Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
  • Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
  • Serum Prolactin
  • Serum Inhibiting Factor

Abnormalities may be a sign of a Primary Hypothalamic, Pituitary, or Testicular problem. However it should be noted that a “Normal” result in the Blood test does NOT mean that there is no underlying problem.
