An endometrial biopsy is an outpatient procedure in which a small sample of tissue is taken from the lining of the uterus. The sample is examined under a microscope by a pathologist and may also be tested using laboratory techniques such as PCR when required.
An endometrial biopsy may be performed during fertility evaluation to assess the endometrium, investigate infection or inflammation and look for conditions such as genital tuberculosis when clinically indicated.
TB-PCR is a laboratory test that can be performed on an endometrial biopsy sample when testing for genital tuberculosis is required.
The procedure is performed by an IVF specialist. A speculum is inserted into the vagina and a narrow biopsy instrument or catheter is passed through the cervix into the uterus to collect a small sample of endometrial tissue.
The procedure is best performed before menstruation. For a woman with a 28-day menstrual cycle, it is usually scheduled between Days 21 and 26, depending on the clinical requirement.
The complete test generally takes about five minutes when performed by an experienced IVF doctor. The actual tissue collection takes approximately 60 seconds.
The procedure is usually tolerated well and may cause minor discomfort or mild cramping. A painkiller such as ibuprofen or paracetamol may be given about half an hour before the procedure to reduce discomfort.
The IVF specialist inserts a speculum and may use Allie's forceps to stabilize the cervix. A narrow instrument or catheter is then passed into the uterus to collect a small tissue sample. Mild cramping may occur during collection.
