Hormone Studies – Male Profile

Hormones play an important role in male reproductive health and sperm production. A male hormone profile can help evaluate hormonal factors that may contribute to low sperm count, poor sperm production, reduced libido or other fertility-related concerns. Blood hormone testing may be recommended as part of a comprehensive male infertility evaluation. Hormones such as FSH, LH and testosterone work together to regulate testicular function, sperm production and male reproductive health. Depending on the patient's symptoms, semen analysis and clinical history, the fertility specialist may recommend specific hormone tests to understand whether hormonal factors could be contributing to fertility problems. The results can then be considered along with other investigations to support an individualized evaluation and treatment plan.

Fewer than 3% of cases of male infertility are estimated to be primarily due to a hormonal cause.

If semen parameters are abnormal (Low sperm count, no sperms) or there is evidence of sexual dysfunction, hormone tests are indicated. It is not a routine part of evaluation of a male

Hormones that are produced by the pituitary, hypothalamus and testicles play an important role in sexual development and sperm production in Men.

When clinically indicated, testing of specific serum hormone levels of following hormones are ordered:

  • Free Testosterone
  • Total Testosterone
  • Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
  • Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
  • Serum Prolactin
  • Serum Inhibiting Factor

Abnormalities may be a sign of a Primary Hypothalamic, Pituitary, or Testicular problem. However it should be noted that a “Normal” result in the Blood test does NOT mean that there is no underlying problem.

Frequently Asked Questions About Male Hormone Studies

Find answers about male reproductive hormones, hormone testing, fertility evaluation and interpretation of hormone results.

A male hormone profile is a group of blood tests used to evaluate reproductive hormones that influence testosterone production, sperm production and male reproductive function.

Hormone testing can help identify endocrine or hormonal factors that may contribute to abnormal sperm production or other fertility-related problems.

Depending on the clinical situation, testing may include FSH, LH, testosterone and prolactin. Additional tests such as estradiol, SHBG or thyroid-related hormones may be considered when clinically indicated.

FSH is involved in the regulation of sperm production. Abnormal FSH levels can provide useful information about testicular sperm-production function.

LH stimulates the Leydig cells in the testes to produce testosterone and is an important reproductive hormone.

Testosterone is important for male reproductive and sexual function. Testing may be recommended when low testosterone or hormonal dysfunction is suspected.

Low testosterone can be associated with reproductive and sexual symptoms. However, fertility should be evaluated comprehensively because testosterone treatment itself can affect sperm production.

Prolactin may be tested when symptoms or clinical findings suggest an endocrine problem because abnormal prolactin levels can affect reproductive and sexual function.

No. Hormonal testing is recommended when clinically indicated based on semen analysis, symptoms, physical findings and medical history.

Yes. Reproductive hormone levels are generally evaluated using blood samples.

Testosterone levels can vary during the day, so the timing of testing may be important. Follow the timing instructions provided by your doctor or laboratory.

Hormone testing can provide important information about possible endocrine factors, but results need to be interpreted together with semen analysis, medical history, examination and other investigations.

Yes. Male infertility can have many causes, and normal reproductive hormone levels do not necessarily mean that sperm production or sperm function is normal.

It is better to discuss the results with a fertility specialist because hormone levels need to be interpreted according to symptoms, timing of testing, laboratory reference ranges and other fertility findings.

Depending on the clinical situation, the evaluation may include semen analysis, physical examination, genetic testing, ultrasound or other specialised male infertility investigations.

The cost depends on the specific hormones recommended and the laboratory charges. Current prices should be confirmed directly with the clinic or laboratory.
